A book for children, written exclusively for Loughborough Carillon Tower and War Memorial by Alison Mott, and extensively illustrated by Liz Waddell. It is printed on 42 A4 glossy art pages with easy-to-read text.

A True Story

The book tells the true story of a horse called Songster who, with his rider Bert Main, a local Yeomanry soldier, served on the battlefields of France during World War One. Songster was one of the lucky horses who survived the conflict and came back to England.

After the war, Songster was brought to live on West Beacon Farm in Woodhouse Eaves under the charge of ex-squadron Sgt Major Harry Poole. He became a local celebrity, and went on to have a long and happy life.

When Songster eventually died, aged 40, he was buried on the farm with the war medals he had earned in active service.
